Abstract

The total environment is a dynamic system and consists of certain compartments i.e., land, water and air; sector, like forests, wild life and man and subsectors including industry and society. Natural changes in each compartment, sector subsector are slow and nonviolent. The intracompartmental stresses produced therein are automatically balanced by intracompartmental  transmission of microscis. But the unplanned human activity has affected the basic components of the environment. This has been greatly over burdened by them and has produced stress causing elements beyond self-balance. Water is the most important component of the biosphere and it is the prime requirement for the existence of life. Two third of the earth surface is covered by a vol. 15 x 108 cubic kilometers of water. The fresh water resources are approximately 36 x 106 sq.km and only about 1.25 x 1017 kg. of this water is present in the form of lakes.
