Abstract

Cytogenetic analyses were made during meiosis in an F1 seedless hybrid produced in a cross between Solanum macrocarpon L. and S. aethiopicum L. The study revealed that the hybrid is monosomic with a chromosome number of 2n–1 = 23. The total failure of sced production could be due to (I) the aneuploid nature of the hybrid, (2) the prccocious movement of the odd chromosome at anaphase I followed by precocious separation and movement of the two chromatids of this chromosome at anaphase II, when they either move into the same gamete or into different gametes, and (3), the presence of multivalent association of chromosomes at diakinesis.
