Abstract

A multifaceted approach was undertaken to determine the cytogenetic relationships between two Indian strains (from Pune and Chandigarh) of Aedes (Stegomyiaalbopictus. Experimental hybridization studies revealed that there were no premating and postmating barriers between these strains. Fertilities and sex-ratios were normal in reciprocal crosses and backcrosses. The karyotypes of these two strains were identical. Meiotic analyses indicated polymorphism for paracentric inversion in the m-chromosome of the two sexchromosomes (Mm) in PUNE strain, while the CHANDIGARH strain was free from such polymorphism. The mean chiasmata frequency of strains ranged from 3.49±0.10 to 3.70± 0.10, and those of interstrain hybrids from 3.47±0.04 to 3.61±0.07. Based on these data, these two strains of Ae. albopictus appeared genetically very similar and thus, represent conspecific populations of the same species.
