Abstract
The incidence of consanguinity in 800 mentally retarded children was found to be 39.87%. The observation was discussed in comparison with the data of earlier reports from Andhra Pradesh and other parts of India. The observed high incidence indicates the necessity of thorough search for genetic diseases in the offspring of consanguinous parents.
