Abstract

A method has been established for the estimation of sapogenines in Chlorophytum borivilianum, based on the classical Liebermann-Burchard reaction (1885), the method is sensitive and spectrophotometric. In the assay, acetic anhydride and concentrated sulphuric acid are allowed to react with the sapogenine extractable in a chloroform solution that produces a characteristic blue-green colour, the intensity of which was measured at 667 mm in a Hitachi Spectrophotometer, model U-2000. Thus, the quantitative estimation of sapogenine present in the sample is made possible.
